Canola oil could help reduce abdominal fat in just four weeks, according to research presented on November 2, 2016 at an Obesity Society congress.

Canola oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, such as oleic acid, a category of lipids that is also found in olive oil. It also contains polyunsaturated fatty acids: linoleic acid (an omega-6) and alpha-linoleic acid (an omega-3), with an omega-6 / omega-3 ratio close to the physiological needs.

Here, researchers tested the effects of five different vegetable oils in a controlled trial. For four weeks participants had to follow a diet containing one of the following oils: conventional canola oil or enriched with oleic acid (with or without DHA, omega-3), corn and safflower oil or linseed oil and safflower oil.

Participants consumed two smoothies during the day, containing the oil tested. The amount of oil was calculated according to the needs of the participants. For example, a person who had a 3,000 calorie diet had 60 g of oil per day which accounted for 18% of the energy provided by the diet. All participants had abdominal obesity or a large waist circumference.

Results: When participants consumed conventional canola oil or enriched with oleic acid for four weeks, they lost abdominal fat. The researchers found that after one month with canola oil participants lost 110 g of abdominal fat. The weight lost at this point in the body has not been redistributed elsewhere.

Abdominal fats are particularly harmful to health, hence the interest of a diet that specifically allows to lose those fats.

It should be noted, however, that the study was partly financed by the North American canola producers, which raises doubts about the results.

According to Penny Kris-Etherton, a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania State University, Generally , you can not target weight loss to specific areas of the body. But, monounsaturated fatty acids seem to specifically target abdominal fat.
